World’s First 3D-printed Office Building Completed

Recently the world’s first 3D-printed office building was completed in Dubai. 3D printing is a new form of technology that is revolutionizing the world of architecture. It allows designers to create intricate designs on the computer, and then with the simple click of the button a large printer-like machine goes to work and “prints” the entire building on its own.

Located within the Dubai Emirates Towers complex, the new “Office of the Future” occupies 23 square meters and now serves as a fully functional office. It’s not the first 3D-printed building in the world, but it is the first office building of its kind .A 6 x 36 x 12 meter printer laid down most of the cement frame and walls of the building, while smaller printers worked on the finer details.

Taking only 17 days to complete the basic structure of the building, the printers finished the construction work way faster than human workers could have, and for a fraction of the cost. The building was printed in sections elsewhere and then assembled in two days on site. In total, the printing process only required one worker to supervise, and the assembly required seven. Finally, another ten electricians and other specialists handled the finishing touches. Compare this to the hundreds of workers required using traditional construction methods.

With such impressive results, some architects and construction workers are beginning to wonder if they might someday be out of a job!
