Dogs are often called “man’s best friend”, but did you know that many people rely on dogs to help them in daily life. These types of dogs are known as service dogs. A service dog is trained to help a person with a disability. For example, guide dogs help people who can’t see, and hearing dogs help people who can’t hear.

For people who are blind, guide dogs are trained to lead them so they can move around safely. They help them walk upstairs, cross busy roads, and avoid bumping into things. Another type of service dog is a hearing dog. These dogs help deaf people listen for specific sounds, such as a phone ringing, a knock at the door, or a baby crying. Instead of barking, hearing dogs will lead their owners to the source of the sound.
