A fortnight is two weeks, or “fourteen nights.” However, Fortnite is a computer game which has become one of the most popular trends in the past decade.

The premise is simple: 100 players are dropped onto an island, and use a variety of weapons to try and eliminate each other. The last person alive is the winner, and the game begins again. What makes the game so exciting and creative is the ability for each player to build structures instantly to help their attack or defense positions. To encourage players to not just hide, the available area of the island gets smaller and smaller, forcing players to group together and fight for survival.

The game was first released in September of 2017, and within a few weeks already had 10 million players. After six months, it had 45 million players, and one year after being launched, Epic, the company behind Fortnite, announced that they had reached over 200 million players. This success has led to Epic being worth 15 billion US dollars just one year after Fortnite was created. This is particularly amazing since Fortnite is free, and can be downloaded by anyone without paying anything. The revenue comes from microtransactions, when players can buy individual items like clothes, dance moves, and other things that can help each player establish his own unique style within the game.

Fortnite has since been a juggernaut in popular culture. Celebrities like famous DJs and basketball players have gotten in on it. The dance moves in the game are frequently performed in real life. Schools worry that kids spend too much time playing Fortnite on their phones instead of studying. The game’s impact has been felt across society, and doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down.
