Egypt’s Youngest Mummy Discovered

Recently, the youngest Egyptian mummy on record was discovered.

The 44-cm wooden box was actually discovered more than 100 years ago at Giza, Egypt, and it has been in a museum in England since then. Researchers initially believed the box had been used to hold organs of a dead person. In ancient Egypt, when dead bodies were being turned into mummies, their organs were usually removed and placed in boxes such as this one.

However, in 2016 researchers were doing further tests on the box. A CT scan revealed that there was actually a tiny skeleton inside the box. The skeleton is a human fetus aged 16-18 weeks. Despite how small the fetus was, great care was taken to prepare the body.

This is not the first fetus mummy that has ever been found. For example, 25-week-old and 37-week-old ones were found many years ago. But this is definitely the youngest and smallest one ever found.
